(Introduction)
Memories of a Modest Reality began as a series of paintings and has since evolved by using digital interventions to create imagined histories & new futures.

(Approach)
Let the real place become the beginning of the fiction.
Let the real place become the beginning of the fiction.
The paintings document what exists. The digital layer imagines what might have existed — or what might exist next.
The paintings document what exists. The digital layer imagines what might have existed — or what might exist next.
The original paintings strip buildings down to simplified forms, heightened colour and minimal detail, hovering somewhere between documentation and unreliable memory. Rather than changing that visual language, the AR work builds upon it. Each painting becomes a portal into an additional layer of place-based storytelling. Animated creatures, invented folklore and subtle digital interventions emerge through a phone or tablet, allowing an otherwise static image to hold multiple versions of the same place: what was there, what is remembered and what might be imagined. Importantly, the digital layer does not attempt to reconstruct a definitive history. It deliberately introduces fiction. Folklore becomes a way of exploring how communities continually remake places through stories. That last paragraph is important. It gives the project conceptual rigour and prevents anyone reading it as “cute AR creatures added to paintings.”

(Challenge)
How do you preserve a place without pretending you can stop it from changing?
How do you preserve a place without pretending you can stop it from changing?
The buildings in the original series are ordinary by design: storefronts, roadside structures and small-town architecture that can disappear without ever being considered historically significant. Painting them records their existence, but documentation alone can turn preservation into nostalgia. The challenge became finding a way for the work to acknowledge disappearance without freezing these places in the past. Rather than reconstructing what has been lost, the project uses folklore to allow the places to continue changing — even if what comes next is imaginary.

(Solution)
Give disappearing places an afterlife.
Give disappearing places an afterlife.
Augmented reality creates a second narrative layer without physically altering the paintings. Viewed normally, each work remains a quiet architectural portrait. Viewed through a device, another reality appears: creatures move through windows, stories emerge and familiar buildings become sites of contemporary folklore.

Because the digital work exists as an overlay, the project can continue evolving. New stories, animations and interpretations can be attached to existing works without replacing what came before. The result is less a finished archive than a growing mythology — one capable of changing alongside the places it documents.

An archive that refuses to stay still.

What began as a painting series has developed into an ongoing experiment in place, memory and digital folklore. By combining physical artwork with an evolving AR layer, the project creates a format in which documentation and invention can coexist — and where a finished painting does not have to mean a finished story.

Echoes From The Audience
Echoes From The Audience
Physical + Digital
Original paintings remain complete works in their own right while augmented reality introduces an optional second layer of narrative, movement and interpretation.
An Evolving Folklore
Rather than reconstructing historical stories, the project creates new folklore around overlooked places, exploring how myth and collective imagination contribute to a sense of place.
Built to Keep Changing
The AR layer allows new creatures, stories and interactions to be added over time, turning a static body of work into an evolving digital archive.
